When I was a little girl, I remember being a bit obsessed with my mom’s scrapbook album. Even though the book was nearly falling apart, I never tired of turning the big, black pages, pulling them close to my face, and studying the people in the photos.

I would peer at the faces of my parents as 20-year olds, put the book down, and then the questions would begin. “What did you think the first time you met Dad?” I’d ask. I remember Mom telling me that she was getting so old that she often didn’t remember all of the details. I was horrified, wondering how anyone could forget those things!

I can’t imagine growing up without those photos. They gave me a sense of my place in our family, and of my parents’ place in their own families. It was surreal to see my parents as young people and to imagine their lives before I came on the scene.

Little did I know back then, but those albums created bonding times between my mom and I. And little did I know that one day I would become a photographer with a mission to preserve those same kind of memories and bonding times for others.
